Bigger shells deliver a bigger blast radius.
~ In-game description

Bigger Blast is the first upgrade of Path 1 for the Mortar Monkey in Bloons TD 6. It increases blast radius of the Mortar Monkey's explosions, from 20 to 30, and increases pierce from 25 to 45. If crosspathed with Signal Flare, the flare blast increases from 52 to 72, while crosspathing with Blooncineration increases its wall of fire attack's pierce from 20 to 25 and slightly increases the radius of each blaze.

This upgrade costs $425 on Easy, $500 on Medium, $540 on Hard, and $600 on Impoppable.

Description[]

Overview[]

Bigblastmortar

Bigger Blast

The Mortar Monkey's Mortar now has a yellow line on the top and middle part of the barrel. These changes are consistent among crosspaths.

Bigger Blast increases the strength of explosions, increasing blast radius from 20 to 30, and pierce from 25 to 45. It also increases blast radius of Signal Flare's flares, and pierce and radius of Blooncineration's blazes.

Targeting Priorities[]

Mortar Monkey has only one target priority, "Set Target". This allows the Mortar Monkey to land shells within anywhere inside the target reticle. Tapping on the "Set Target" button prompts the player to change the target position of where the Mortar Monkey will land its shells. By default, once the Mortar Monkey is bought, the Mortar Monkey's target reticle is placed near the start of the first bloon track.

If Striker Jones's Level 7+ Target Focus ability is activated, all Mortar Monkeys are automatically set to Follow Touch / Follow Mouse temporarily, unless manually re-targeted via Set Target, and snap back to their old Set Target option once the ability is finished.

Strategy[]

Summary[]

Having a bigger blast radius helps the Mortar Monkey's explosions hit greater numbers of bloons per shot. It is especially useful when located onto small loops like the loops on In the Loop and large loops like the craters of Moon Landing and the large lake of toxic waste on Spillway. As a bonus, the Mortar Monkey gains much more pierce, perfect when there is a large crowd of bloons.

Tips[]

  • It is usually better to get Path 2 or Path 3 for the early-game, but Path 1 can be better if there is a good bend or loop around. But for mid-game, this upgrade is generally the better upgrade for Heavy Shells and Artillery Battery for the better hit consistency, even surpassing that for Increased Accuracy.
  • Certain cases call for the much greater pierce of Bigger Blast, such as in Race Events with Mortar starts. Also helpful when utilizing max pierce of Burny Stuff.

Balance Changes[]

So far, the only changes applied here are based on crosspathing changes. However, not adding Path 2 crosspath is buffed overall, with an almost negligible nerf to 1-2-0.

We’re looking to shakeup mortar in a couple small ways this update, along with Striker Jones changes noted further on for ‘multi-mortaring’ synergy. From the base level Mortar has far more pierce than should ever be necessary at low rounds but doesn’t hit beefy enough for the low fire rate, so we are trading up some base pierce for damage, instead moving this lost pierce up into crosspath. [...]
~ Ninja Kiwi
  • BUFF Bigger Blast base damage increased (1 → 2)
  • Change Indirect buff, as pierce remains 45 while 0-x-x variants only have 25 pierce instead of 40.
    • Actual pierce bonus is +20 instead of +5.

Trivia[]

  • Bigger Blast is the most expensive T1 Mortar upgrade in this game.
  • When first released, Bigger Blast added a small pierce increase, but Version 39.0 changed it to provide almost double base explosion pierce.
